The “U-Tube”: An improved aspirated temperature system for mobile meteorological observations, especially in severe weather

Abstract Obtaining quality air temperature measurements in complex mesoscale environments, such as thunderstorms or frontal zones, is problematic, and particularly challenging from a moving platform. For some time mobile weather platforms known Mobile Mesonets (MMs) have used custom aspirated shields. The original design was the “J-Tube”, which addresses but not all of unique problems associated with measurements. VORTEX-2 2009, second, well documented shield, R.M. Young (RMY) 43408 included also found to certain shortcomings severe environments. Between end VORTEX2 2009 start 2010, third new shield called “U-tube” designed, tested installed. Reported here are results efforts better characterize J-Tube, RMY 43408, U-Tube. Several tests designed isolate key aspects radiation shield’s performance, performance rain, high solar radiation, varying wind conditions, general response were completed. A period intercomparison between three shields during 2010 season VORTEX 2 highlight each being “real world” conditions. Results indicate that U-Tube has several significant advantages over J-tube terms aspiration rate, sampling efficiency, variable winds, periods, time. Given these results, U-tube should be utilized for observations going forward.
